The Guardian’s Ambition: Martinez Ready to Challenge for No.1 Shirt

Chasing the Number One Spot

Josep Martinez has tasted success at the San Siro, but the Spanish shot-stopper isn't satisfied with a supporting role. Despite Inter’s historic domestic double, Martinez is already setting his sights on the 2026/27 campaign. Speaking to AS, he made his intentions crystal clear: he is ready to recharge and fight for more space in Cristian Chivu’s starting eleven. While Yann Sommer remained the primary choice for the bulk of the Scudetto charge, Martinez’s five Serie A appearances have given him the confidence to believe he can be the "key player" Inter needs for the long-term future.

The Champions League Stain

While the season was largely "exceptional" with the Scudetto and Coppa Italia safely in the trophy cabinet, Martinez admits there is one major regret lingering in the Appiano Gentile locker room: the exit to Bodø/Glimt. The elimination remains a bitter pill, especially considering the absence of Lautaro Martinez during that tie. Josep was candid about the impact of our captain’s absence, noting that the team’s main attacking threat is "irreplaceable." For Martinez, the goal next season is to ensure that even without the talisman, the defense remains an impenetrable wall that can survive the highest-pressure European nights.

Farewell to a Leader: Dumfries to Real

The interview also touched on the inevitable: Denzel Dumfries’ high-profile move to join José Mourinho at Real Madrid. Martinez didn't hold back his praise for the Dutchman, calling him a "fantastic player and an excellent teammate." While he expressed sadness at losing one of Inter’s dressing room leaders, he backed Dumfries to thrive in a back four at the Bernabeu. Martinez even compared Denzel's relentless work rate to Ferland Mendy, predicting that his power and speed will redefine Madrid’s right flank—though he jokingly added he wishes Denzel the best "except when he plays against us."

The National Team Dream

Beyond the black and blue of Milano, Martinez is fueled by the ambition of wearing the Spanish national team jersey. "I know how difficult it is to get into the national team, but I’m not giving up," he stated. He recognizes that the path to a call-up from Emerse Faé goes directly through his performances at Inter. For Josep, every minute earned is a step closer to that international goal. If he can replicate his league form on a more consistent basis, it won't just be Chivu who has a goalkeeper dilemma, but the Spanish selectors as well.

The ForzaIM Take

I love this mentality. Too many keepers are happy to sit on the bench and collect medals, but Josep wants blood. With Provedel almost signed, we need that internal competition to keep everyone sharp. As for Dumfries, losing a leader to Real Madrid always hurts, but if he’s going to "the Special One," at least we know he's being coached by someone who understands the Inter spirit. Let’s see if Martinez can turn that ambition into a starting spot by Christmas.

Do you think Josep Martinez has shown enough in his five appearances to be trusted with the starting goalkeeper spot next season?
