Zhang Demands His €450M Pound of Flesh

Just when we thought the Suning era was behind us, Steven Zhang returns with a €450 million lawsuit that could shake Oaktree’s balance sheets.

The Ghost of Suning Past

You can take the President out of the Meazza, but you clearly can’t take the litigation out of the President. Two years after Oaktree Capital officially seized control of the Beneamata, Steven Zhang has reportedly filed a massive lawsuit in Luxembourg. According to Corriere dello Sport, Zhang is hunting for a staggering €450 million. It’s a move that targets the "Marcian pact"—a legal principle that prevents creditors from profiting excessively off a seized asset. Zhang’s camp argues that by the time Oaktree triggered their claim in April 2024, Inter was worth far more than the €400 million debt he owed them.

The Price of a Double

The timing of this legal strike is calculated. Since the takeover, Inter’s value has skyrocketed thanks to the tactical genius of Cristian Chivu and the back-to-back trophies that delivered the historic Double. Zhang is essentially arguing that the "fair market value" of the club—bolstered by a second Champions League final in three seasons and drastically improved commercial revenues—should have left a surplus in his pockets. If the Luxembourg courts agree that the club was worth upwards of €850M or €900M at the time of the default, Oaktree might have to write a very large check to the man who once promised us "the stars."

Financial Shadows Over the Scudetto

While this lawsuit doesn't directly threaten Inter’s day-to-day operations or Chivu’s transfer budget for the 2026/27 campaign, it certainly shifts the mood in the boardroom. For Oaktree, this is a "profit margin" problem. Any compensation awarded to Zhang would increase the total cost of their acquisition and lower the eventual ROI when they decide to sell the club. For us Interisti, it’s a standard Tuesday—pitting a sovereign wealth fund against a former owner who still posts about the club on Instagram. It’s the kind of high-stakes financial theater that makes Italian football the greatest soap opera on earth.

Independent Eyes on the Accounts

The case will likely hinge on independent valuations. Experts will have to look back at the 2024 books and decide if the "Chivu effect" and the brand's global growth were properly accounted for when the keys were handed over. Oaktree will argue they took on a club buried in debt; Zhang will argue they stole a diamond for the price of a zircon. Regardless of the outcome, the shadow of Suning continues to loom over Viale della Liberazione, proving that in football finance, nothing is ever truly settled.

The ForzaIM Take

Zhang might be gone, but his lawyers are clearly still in peak physical condition. Do I think he’ll get the full €450M? Unlikely. But he’s clearly looking for a settlement. As long as this doesn't stop Marotta from closing the next big transfer or Chivu from winning a third straight trophy, Steven can sue until his heart is content. Just don't ask us to pay for it.

Does Steven Zhang deserve a payout for the value he helped build, or should he just be happy he isn't still personally liable for the Suning debt?
